^"Xmas" is not a non-religious shorthand for Christmas. The "X" is actually an abbreviation of the Greek word for Christ. For more info check out these 2 links. The Origin of Xmas. & The "X" in "Xmas" Doesn't Take the "Christ" out of "Christmas".

*This is written up the left hand, inside margin of the diary entry.

  1. Hi there! How have you been?
Was shocked to see "Xmas" written here. Thought that wasn't used until quite a bit later...

    1. Apparently the "X" is the Greek letter "Chi" & was often used as an abbreviation of Christ's name for hundreds of years. I've added a link to the post.

Thanks for visiting this flashback to 1936. I'm sure Irene would be pleased! We'd love to hear from you.
