Made elderberry pie and layer cake and worked in garden this afternoon
hoed tomatoes, cabbages and onions.

A dog got in Leroy's sheep killed one bit 2-

Leroy Bower drilled corn today-
was here for dinner-
Harry Baker & Kenneth Wright brought a coal box on a truck-
a bushel of seed potatoes & chicken wire fence-
Mother run away after supper to Evans' before I missed her.
Was mad because I came for her-
Elnora & Susie Harring helped me get her home-

plesant all day, warm
The hay pressers worked all day and took tractor home at night-
Charles' wife and Junior called and Elnora Evans and Dorothy Delano also-
I done part of the ironing and mended this afternoon-
It has been a very warm day
Mother did not like the ironing and wanted the coal^ fires all out and no wood-
^"coal" was added in after Irene wrote "fires" because it appears above like it was added for clarification due to having wood fires also.

Took the leaves used as banking from the north wall of house and from around the dog house
worked in yard most of day-
Elnora Evans called this eve selling Girl Scout cookies*-
Aunty rec'd a letter from Clara
Mother has been good all day-
*You have now idea how excited I am that Irene has mentioned a girl in the neighborhood selling Girl Scout Cookies. My sister & I sold them for years. I helped my daughter sell them when she was a Brownie Scout. Now a bit of history from the Girl Scout website: Basically, Girls Scouts had been selling cookies to raise money for years, but in 1934 the council in Philadelphia started selling commercially made cookies. New York followed suit in 1935 & used the trefoil symbol. In 1936 (the year of Irene's diary), national got involved, & by 1937 125 councils were on board.

Stormy and windy and cold wave-
Rec'd letter from Clara telling about a storm in Newburg-
Done all the chores today and hemed Aunty's dress and finished an apron for Mother
Mother has been pretty good all day-
*Christine refers to Christine Smith. I never met her, but I did meet her brother Chester Smith & his wife Laura when I was in high school. They grew orchids for Cornell University. You can see Chester & Christine's birthdays listed on the paper above.
